Katsina State House of Assembly has granted approval to Governor Aminu Bello Masari to participate in Federal Government backed special intervention programme expected to reduce the price of fertilizer to N5000 perbag, its speaker, Abubakr Yahaya Kusada, has said.
Kusada, who spoke at a special session of the house on the matter, said that the approval was in response to a letter to that effect sent to the assembly by the governor.
Reading the content of the letter on the floor of the house, the speaker noted that the state government was expected to sign the agreement for the procurement of the commodity with the consent of the legislature as the cost of the fertilizer would be deducted at source from its statutory allocation.
He further explained that the farmers in the state participating states would not only get the commodity before this year’s raining season but also pay the subsidized rate as against its present market value of over N8000 per bag.
The speaker therefore solicited the cooperation and understanding of his members in view of the importance of the programme in boosting agricultural production in the state and the country.
Deputy leader of the assembly and member representing Bakori constituency, Abdulrazak Ismail Tsiga, who moved the motion on the matter, assured that the partnership was part of the efforts of the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration to encourage farming and food security for sustainable development of Nigerians and the nation.
Tsiga advised that Katsina should embrace the programme to allow its farmers take advantage of affordable fertilizer in good time, saying the intervention programme couldnot have come at a better time.
