FUDMA: 5 major sins of Prof Kaita that allegedly made him to be suspended (READ)

It could be recalled that leadership crisis is rocking the Federal University Dutsin-ma, Katsina as  the University’s governing council under the leadership of Dr Marliya Zayyana and Vice Chancellor Professor Abdu Kaita are at loggerheads.

KATSINA POST learnt that both parties were accusing each other of undermining each other’s authority at the university, a situation which is affecting the smooth running of the institution.

Finally the governing councils side chaired by Dr Marliya Zayyana has opened up regarding what led to the incidence in which they listed five (5) major atrocities that according to them forced them to took the decision of suspending the Vice Chancellor of the University in person of Professor Haruna Abdu Kaita.

Bellow are the crimes he committed according to them:

1. In one particular submission to the EFCC, a socio-cultural group under the umbrella of “Katsina Indigenes Forum” accused the Vice Chancellor of among others awarding contracts valued at tens of millions of Naira to his biological son and cronies without consideration and approval of the University Tenders’ Board. Many of these contracts were also never advertised as the law required him to do. In one instance, a fake “Minutes of Meeting” that purportedly approved a road construction contract was alleged to have been forged and members coerced into signing the ‘Minutes’ in order to cover up the illegality associated with the deal.

2. Another group which wrote under the identity of “Concerned Stakeholders” alleged that Professor Kaita awarded a contract to the tune of N130 million for construction of 250 metres road on the 29/03/2017. Then, in an act of flagrant disregard for due process he paid out the entire contract sum (N130million) to the contractor the following day 30/03/2017. The contractor in turn remitted a sum of N30million on 31/03/2017 to an account supplied to him by the Vice Chancellor. What is equally very curious is the suggestion in the petition that the contractor in question never participated in the bidding process. All the three companies that participated and found qualified from the bidding exercise were jettisoned in favour of the Vice Chancellor’s preferred outsider.

3. Some staff of the institution who spoke under condition of anonymity generally detest Prof. Kaita’s incompetence and unpardonable contempt for standard as a University Administrator.

4. Besides the slip in Competitiveness Ranking from 14th to 34th position that the University experienced within just one year under his watch they also cited as example the looming extinction of 2 of the 23 programmes that were handed over to him by the previous administration. The two Programmes in question, B.Sc. Food Science and Fisheries were particularly hard hit by the mass termination of appointments by Prof. Kaita in May 2016 as they lost virtually all their academic staff to the cold-blooded action. As a consequence, the University had to resort to deploying Lab Technicians with HND to teach in Undergraduate classes.

5. The Council further found Professor Kaita’s high handedness, insubordination and absolute disregard for its authority very distasteful and unbecoming of a seasoned administrator. An instance of this is his refusal to implement Council’s directive that all its pioneer graduates who made First Class grade (and most of whom happened to be Katsina State indigenes) be absorbed into academic positions in the University.

Given that the decision to suspend the VC is what law and common sense dictate and Mr. President has also recently taken similar step by suspending the SGF pending the outcome of investigation into allegations of misconducts leveled against him, one cannot help but commend Dr. (Mrs) Marliya Zayyan and her team for displaying uncommon courage and exemplary leadership in doing the right thing for the University in particular and the nation in general.
